OUR COMMUNITY
SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY
VLT supports many Bay Area organizations serving our local communities.
Lindsay Wildlife Museum
Lindsay Wildlife Experience is a non-profit organization located in Walnut Creek, California. Its mission is to connect people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share. Lindsay is the country’s first wildlife hospital, a zoological organization, and educational museum specializing in native California wildlife. Every year more than 5,000 wild animal patients are treated, among the many animal ambassadors. We are proud to announce that VLT has adopted two of Lindsay’s animal ambassador: Atsa, the Bald Eagle, and Penelope the North American Porcupine
Atsá, the bald eagle, injured her right wing when she fell into a ravine. The nest built by her parents was destroyed in a storm. The wing didn’t heal properly, so Atsá was accepted into the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri.
She came to live at Lindsay Wildlife in 2016, and is currently 13 years old. As a captive bald eagle, Atsá may live into her 40s, compared with the 20 year lifespan of wild bald eagles.

Did you know our Penelope is a “night owl”? North American porcupines are nocturnal, which means they’re active at night. They are excellent climbers, using their long curved claws, rough foot pads and even their tails to help them climb!
This special animal ambassador was born and raised in captivity. Since Penelope has been with people her entire life, she is habituated to our care at Lindsay and cannot be released.
